MumblesHiphop.com's "Music for Self" [August, 2004]
reviewed by Kaleal Crooks for Hiphopcrib.com
Pros: the general feel of the album
Cons: the idiot mumbling all over the album
Score: 1/10 (actually 7/10, if it hadn’t been for the idiot from mumbleshiphop.com)
Music for Self, well, initially it was the album title and cover that caught my attention so I decided to pick this up. The variety of unknown music was very appealing, so I hit play...
Immediately, there was this extremely boring voice that opened up the album, but it must have only been some sort of intro right? Wrong, track 2 rolls in, the beat and emcee almost has me bobbing my head, then I hear the cornball again. "MUMBLES HIPHOP PROMOTION," nobody should pay for this tape. Nobody should promote this tape. The website promotion is turned up to make the actual music seem quiet, so it is hard to overlook. It's much like cleavage to most males, no matter what you do, you can't ignore it. If this CD portrayed the game "wall ball" that we use to play in elementary school, the dummy who decided to talk all over the album should be put on the wall, facing forward, as all the emcees line up and get a free shot to his manhood with the tennis ball, maybe afterwards his voice would have more character.
Most of the emcees are good minus one or two; however, it is hard to pay attention. The emcees get boring, it sounds like one big underground tape. The speedy rhymes accompanied with "sampled" and somewhat muddy, underground beats will leave your head bobbing but your not sure why and once the CD is off, nothing is catchy. Hip hop elevator music is born.
Another decent online compilation completely ruined by the DJ-esque shout outs placed throughout the album, tsk-tsk. The emcees have potential, but these clouds are too thick to attempt to shine through. (track listing and more information can be found
here.)
