"Surfacing" LP [August, 2004]
reviewed by Are Esp (artist from Texas)

To start it off, the quality of the album is nice – despite being recorded on a Shure SM58 mic, thanks to good mixing. As far as the lyrics go, its all a matter of taste; I dig a good portion of them but there are some tracks that I don’t feel. (A variety of topics are covered throughout the album, as well as moods). The flow is there and the production is there, though I would like to hear Prizm with different producers, as the beats on the LP got boring after a while.

Prizm also takes his shot at singing, which I don’t really dig for the most part. (Hearing the same person singing on the hook is kind of ehhh…) Some of the choruses are also kind of cheesy, though you might like it depending on your musical tastes. Overall, I think this isn’t for the mainstream music fans or the hardcore underground heads. My two favourite tracks from the “Surfacing” LP are “Get Funky Now” and “All I Want.” (Both tracks were produced by Johnik.)

In a nut shell, this album has its up and downs but Prizm’s lyrics and flows go well with these beats. Nowadays, there are hardly even standards for releasing an album anymore, but Prizm still proceeded to do it properly, for the most part, and he earns my respect for that. Some will like this, and some won’t. But this is definitely worth giving a listen, I give it a 4ish out of 5 and I look forward to hearing more from him in the future.

Score: Around 4 out of 5
