"Surfacing" LP [October, 2004]
reviewed by Spartz for Hiphopcrib.com
Pros: Diversity and the feel throughout the whole album
Cons: The tracks were diverse, but Prizm's deliveries weren't diverse enough
Score: 8/10
Recommend? Yes.
This is definitely one of the better albums I've heard this year. Not just considering independent artists, but all artists. From upbeat tracks like 'One Two Three' and 'Get Funky Now' to more emotional tracks like 'Dear Love' and, my personal favourite, 'Surfacing (Into The Sun)'.
The CD has some great beats, from the remix of the Muppets theme in the introduction track, to the beat of 'Surfacing' which is hard to explain. You gotta hear it yourself. Let me break down some of the tracks on the album.
'One Two Three'. The first track on the album. As said before the Muppets theme was remixed to make this beat. It starts with the two commentators of the Muppets who always bitch at the artists in the Muppets and the track ends with them liking it. Prizm has a solid delivery on this track and shows some speed in his raps.
'Surfacing (Into the Sun)'. The title track of the album. Definitely my favourite track. Prizm sings throughout most of the track, which is pretty interesting. It's a welcome variation of the fast-paced hip-hop on the album. Prizm was afraid that people wouldn't like this song, so he told me. In my case there's nothing to fear, best track on the album. Very creative.
'Would You' featuring Eunnie. A nice piano beat. A relaxed mood on the track. Made use of the singer on this. The delivery is real nice on here, voice matches the mood perfectly.
Overall this CD is a very good drop and definitely worth the money. I felt though that I got tired of the CD pretty quickly. After about 7-8 tracks the diversity of the CD goes and the CD consists of soft/love-related tracks. The 3 additional tracks on the CD did not add much to the CD in my opinion; they just made it last a bit longer. Nevertheless this is a very creative CD and I'm already anxious to see Prizm's next drop, wondering what he'll do on that album.
