Spotlight on Prizm [April, 2004]
written by Jason Jung for Youthink Magazine
Who is Prizm? He’s Vancouver’s own Kevin Chung. He has created well over 200 original instrumentals ranging from jazz to hip-hop. At the young age of 17, this budding rapper/producer is making a name for himself after selling more than 60 of his original compositions to independent artists and national record labels. Saying he has achieved a lot in his young career is an understatement, and it looks like he’s going to add more accomplishments to his impressive repertoire.
A few years ago, Kevin had no idea he would be a rapping in front of enthusiastic crowds. The idea of becoming a rap artist was suggested by a close friend who was quite aware of his unique gift in poetry and music. Kevin agreed to his friend’s suggestion and participated in a concert event. This experience gave Kevin the inspiration to stick with rap. Also, the thrill of performing was quite rewarding for him.
Prizm, who has been rapping for more than a year, has performed in numerous concerts. He enjoys the live atmosphere and raw energy that leaves his listener’s body. "A lot of times you’ll get an audience that’s really hyped, but I prefer it if the crowd calms down and listens…I love it when people are listening to my lyrics," says Prizm.
Determined to release a debut album, Prizm ignored doubters and pursued his dreams. "In December, I remember releasing a CD and everyone thought I was crazy," says Prizm, "but that didn’t matter to me."
